Students acquire solid knowledge of descriptive grammar of pre-classical (Vedic) and classical Old Indic with special reference to phonology, orthography, nominal and pronominal morphology, the system of compounds, and relevant syntactic peculiarities. Through guided reading of easier and slightly adapted portions of original texts they build up the essential vocabulary and begin to assimilate the structure of the language.
