Students read passages of some representative literary works from the Meiji and Taisho period and thus learn about the development of modern Japanese and about new literar genres based on Western literature. They learn about the historical and cultural background of these works, and about the social turmoils which accompanied Japan's modernization in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
