Students familiarize themselves with the terminology and symbols, the history of the discipline, an overview of Indo-European languages, and the methods for reconstructing Proto-Indo-European. With regard to Indo-European phonology, they learn the principles of the segmental phonology as reconstructed for the proto-language, of the word as a unit, including stress and ablaut patterns. They gain confidence in the basic typology of sound change and are competent in recognizing and applying the most important phonological laws / rules valid in contemporary comparative Indo-European linguistics.
In the tutorial, students learn to anticipate the development of the individual reconstructed segments of the proto-language in the various relevant historical languages.
