The course is designed to introduce students to Spanish and Spanish American literature from their beginnings to the end of the 18th century: chronology, authors, works.

Spanish literature – Middle Ages: historical, cultural and literary definiton of the term; beginnings of Spanish literature – poetry, short prose, novel, theatre.
Literary phenomena of the pre-Columbian era.

Renaissance: definition of the term »Siglo(s) de oro«; historical, cultural and literary contexts of Spanish and Spanish American literature; influence of Italian culture; poetry; chronicles; theatre; prose – the development of novel before Cervantes; Don Quixote at the transition to the Baroque.

Baroque: definition of the term; poetry (»culteranismo«, »conceptismo«), prose, theatre.

Enlightenment: definition of the term; prose fiction, essayistic prose, poetry, theatre.
